ban the use of facial recognition technologies by the policy and other agencies
over privacy and civil liberties concerns, the
New York Times reports
. Even though police across the country have used the
technology to identify criminals, facial recognition has raised fears of abuse
and of turning the country into a police state.

The IZEW congratulates Professor Vera Hemleben on her birthday!

Prof. Dr. Vera Hemleben belonged from the beginning to the discussion group "Ethics in the Natural Sciences", which was founded in 1985 and from which the "Centre for Ethics in the Sciences" emerged in 1990. As a geneticist who dealt with all aspects of molecular biological investigations on plants, she was also a pioneer in the promotion and supervision of interdisciplinary doctoral theses on ethical questions at the then Faculty of Biology in cooperation with the Ethics Centre.

Open Data Day 2019: it’s a wrap!

On Saturday 2nd March 2019, groups from around the world organised over 300 events to celebrate, promote and spread the use of open data. In this blog, we wrap up the ninth edition of Open Data Day with a summary of all that happened across the globe, as well as a look ahead to the future.
This year’s edition saw a total of 325 events registered in the opendataday.org map around the world, with a record total of 26 events in Nepal, and 57 events in Japan! This shows that Open Data Day is well established and a growing community.
