Die bakteriellen CRISPR-Cas-Abwehrsysteme haben sich zu einer bedeutenden Ressource für molekulare Diagnoseverfahren entwickelt. Forschende des Würzburger Helmholtz-Instituts für RNA-basierte Infektionsforschung (HIRI) haben diesen umfangreichen Werkzeugkasten nun erweitert: Ihre neuartige Technologie, PUMA genannt, ermöglicht den Nachweis von RNA mit Cas12-Nukleasen, die herkömmlicherweise DNA schneiden. Die Methode verspricht dabei vielseitige Anwendungsmöglichkeiten und hohe Genauigkeit.

Die Entscheidung musste vom Punkt fallen, wo die Würzburgerinnen die bessern Nerven hatten schließlich mit 4:2 siegten.

Dies ermöglicht neue Perspektiven auf Themen, weitreichende Antworten auf gesellschaftlich relevante Fragestellungen und ein besseres Verständnis der digitalen Transformation. Zugleich ist die Relevanz der Forschung für den Lebensalltag der Menschen zentral.
