Man beobachtet bei Patienten mit der Parkinson-Krankheit, dass sich in deren Nervengewebe Proteinklumpen anlagern, die wiederum aus der Verkettung von Einzelbausteinen (Monomeren) des Proteins α-Synuclein zu sogenannten Amyloidfibrillen bestehen. Ähnliche Ablagerungen findet man auch bei anderen neurodegenerativen Erkrankungen wie der Alzheimer-Demenz. Die Forschung sucht nach Ansätzen, wie die Bildung von Fibrillen gehemmt werden kann und ob dies ein Weg zur Heilung der Krankheiten ist.
