Im Unterschied zu den meisten Nationalkulturen Europas entstand die moderne jiddische Kultur in geografisch auseinanderliegenden Landschaften und ohne den Rückhalt eines Nationalstaates. Sie bewahrte bei aller Unterschiedlichkeit ihren Zusammenhalt quer durch die verschiedenen Mehrheitskulturen und jenseits aller nationalstaatlichen Grenzen. Der geographisch fragmentierte Kulturraum und die Vorstellungen hinter dem Begriff „Jiddischland“, die sprachliche und weltanschauliche Verbundenheit dieser transnationalen Gemeinschaft, werden bei der Tagung umrissen.

This is not my first introduction to him as a scholar; I read his The Sustainable Economics of Elinor Ostrom (2014), which he was kind enough to share with me in proof.
