Lebanon is facing its fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in November 2025, a critical moment that we can leverage to report on the state of digital rights in the country. At a time when the internet infrastructure is still recovering from Israel’s devastating war and as online freedoms face further restrictions, SMEX resorts to the UPR to advocate for meaningful digital rights reforms before the UN Human Rights Council. 

Drazen/AdobestockThe project #NoFakeFacts! is a new initiative from Sparkling Science 2.0 that aims to equip young people with the skills they need to deal with digital information and sources. The idea is to help young people spot fake news, think critically about it, and handle digital content responsibly. As well as boosting media and information literacy, this also promotes young people’s understanding of science and democracy.

Digitalisierung ist nach wie vor ein zentrales Thema unserer Zeit – dies geht aus dem aktuellen Digitalbarometer des Bayerischen Forschungsinstituts für Digitale Transformation (bidt) der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften hervor. Die Studie zeigt eine relativ große Offenheit in Deutschland für neue technische Entwicklungen. Digitale Kompetenzen werden von über 80 Prozent der Menschen im privaten Alltag für wichtig erachtet. Gleichzeitig gibt eine Mehrheit von 61 Prozent an, dass dem Thema Digitalisierung in Deutschland zu wenig Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wird.

The sixth episode of ShareCast is about open source software. This is software under free licences that grants its users four freedoms: to run the software for any purpose, to examine how it works and thus also the source code, to adapt it to their own needs, and to redistribute the software, even in modified versions. This distinguishes it from software that the open source movement refers to as ‘proprietary’ or ‘closed source software,’ which does not offer these ‘fundamental freedoms.’ But how exactly is collaboration and sharing carried out here?

The 4th Alps-Adriatic Inverse Problems Workshop took place at the Department of Mathematics of the Alpen-Adria-Universitaet Klagenfurt during October 2-3, 2025, with 36 participants, 22 contributed talks and two invited lectures, held by Tatiana Bubba, University of Ferrara and Vincent Duval, INRIA.

The European Conference on Computational Optimization 2025 (EUCCO 2025) took place at the Department of Mathematics of the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt from September 29, 2025, to October 1, 2025.

More than 130 participants from 15 countries gathered and presented in more than 120 talks on topics from the focus sessions

On October 7, Teresa Rauscher successfully defended her dissertation on “Imaging with Nonlinear Ultrasound Waves: Modeling, Analysis and Numerics,” becoming the 10th graduate of the doc.funds doctoral school “Modeling-Analysis-Optimization of discrete, continuous and stochastic systems.” The thesis was reviewed by Prof. Mechthild Thalhammer, University of Innsbruck, and Prof. Lehel Banjai, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, who also served as examiners. The dissertation was supervised by Barbara Kaltenbacher, in collaboration with Prof.

On October 1, 2025, Phuoc Truong Huynh successfully completed his doctoral studies with his thesis on “Parameter identification from optimized measurements, with applications in acoustics.” He is thus the eighth doctoral graduate of the doc.funds doctoral school “Modeling-Analysis-Optimization of discrete, continuous, and stochastic systems.” The examiners (and reviewers of the dissertation) were Prof. Tapio Helin, LUT University Finland, and Prof. Vincent Duval, INRIA, France. The thesis was supervised by Barbara Kaltenbacher, AAU, and Prof.
