Aligning Your Data Methods and Your Mission

This blog post is based on a keynote I gave recently at the 2019 SSIR Data on Purpose event. Are you optimistic or pessimistic about data as a tool for good in the world? Over the last few years I’ve seen the shift in answers to this questions. People used to answer “optimistic”, but now most people indicate some mix of emotions. You’ve probably seen the Gartner hype cycle with its suggestion that a technology receives inflated […]

Im Tumor: mit Purpurbakterien auf Fresszellenjagd

Zahlreiche Krebserkrankungen führen zu soliden, also festen Tumoren.

IPv6 Security for IPv4 Engineers

It is often argued that IPv4 practices should be forgotten when deploying IPv6, as after all IPv6 is a different protocol! But we think years of IPv4 operational experience should be leveraged as much as possible.
So we are publishing IPv6 Security for IPv4 Engineers as a roadmap to IPv6 security that is specifically aimed at IPv4 engineers and operators.

Why does AI research and development need more women?

AI depicts society together with the existing injustices!Artificial intelligence (AI) will of course be used in many areas of our society in the coming years - be it in medical diagnoses, in application procedures or in decisions about the creditworthiness of individuals. AI-based systems are based on algorithms invented by humans - and on data that they make available to them. In most cases, the human being is a man. The proportion of women studying computer science has been rising steadily for years.

The anatomy of search: A place for my stuff

A galloping overview
As we have done before, let’s get a bird’s-eye view of the parts of the search process: text comes in and gets processed and stored in a database (called an index); a user submits a query; documents that match the query are retrieved from the index, ranked based on how well they match the query, and presented to the user. That sounds easy enough, but each step hides a wealth of detail. Today we’ll focus on the step where “text is stored in an index”.

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the World Wide Web

Back around 1991, I was traveling throughout the eastern USA teaching an “Introduction to the Internet” course I had written. The students were mainly from telecom, financial, and software companies wanting to know what this Internet thing was all about. I taught about IP addresses and DNS, using email, sending files with FTP,  using archie and veronica to find info, engaging in USENET discussions, and using Gopher to explore “gopherspace”.
