Across London and other European cities, a new way of living is taking root: property guardianship. Blocks of flats, police stations, social housing, libraries, offices, warehouses, schools – buildings that have been taken out of use – are occupied by a new anti-squatting measure: people who guard property by living in it. Michel Bauwens: In the p2p/commons literature of a few years ago, we introduced a way of thinking about the world that challenges the ‘accumulation of capital’ with the ‘accumulation of the common’. There is a tendency to think of this as accumulating simply capital resources of another kind, i.e. for investing (‘transvestment’) in commons-based shared resources. But remember, commons is also always commoning, i.e. it is based on human agency, i.e. an accumulation of commoning. All commons are really social commons, or they are no commons at all.
In the last few years, “Data is the new oil” has become a common catchphrase used by media and scholars alike to highlight the immense value acquired by this 21st century commodity. Although there are several important differences between the two resources, such as the fact that, unlike oil, data is reusable (Even to generate more data), the analogy remains useful to describe the way information is used to power much of modern technological applications.
