AI depicts society together with the existing injustices!Artificial intelligence (AI) will of course be used in many areas of our society in the coming years - be it in medical diagnoses, in application procedures or in decisions about the creditworthiness of individuals. AI-based systems are based on algorithms invented by humans - and on data that they make available to them. In most cases, the human being is a man. The proportion of women studying computer science has been rising steadily for years.

A galloping overview
As we have done before, let’s get a bird’s-eye view of the parts of the search process: text comes in and gets processed and stored in a database (called an index); a user submits a query; documents that match the query are retrieved from the index, ranked based on how well they match the query, and presented to the user. That sounds easy enough, but each step hides a wealth of detail. Today we’ll focus on the step where “text is stored in an index”.

Back around 1991, I was traveling throughout the eastern USA teaching an “Introduction to the Internet” course I had written. The students were mainly from telecom, financial, and software companies wanting to know what this Internet thing was all about. I taught about IP addresses and DNS, using email, sending files with FTP,  using archie and veronica to find info, engaging in USENET discussions, and using Gopher to explore “gopherspace”.

The digitisation of the world of labour – this has almost become a mantra. Whole of Germany is talking about changes in everyday working life, the labour market and industry through Internet-based technologies. The topic is also discussed in the German Parliament, the Digital Agenda Committee debates the important political issues of digital change. But…

Given the scale at which IPv6 must be deployed, it is also important that the possible security implications of IPv6 are well understood and considered during the design and deployment of IPv6 networks, rather than as an afterthought.

Having data for budgets and spending can allow us to track public money flows in our communities. It can give us insights into how governments plan and focus on programmes, public works, and services. So the Global Initiative for Fiscal Transparency (GIFT), along with Open Knowledge International (OKI), have been working on new tools to make this data more useful and easier to understand.

I’ve always been amazed at the things and activities around which commons have been unexpectedly developed – noncommercial theater, humanitarian rescue maps, specialized scientific microscopes. Little did I suspect that I would encounter a commons based on….human excrement.

As part of our objective to develop new standards to measure media pluralism online, the CMPF is now taking submissions of ideas/blog posts to be published as part of CMPF Discussion Series and for papers to be published on the EUI website or the RSCAS working paper Series. Authors of selected papers will be invited to present their papers and attend a workshop at the EUI in Florence in June on media pluralism in the digital age.
