Prof. Dr. Vera Hemleben belonged from the beginning to the discussion group "Ethics in the Natural Sciences", which was founded in 1985 and from which the "Centre for Ethics in the Sciences" emerged in 1990. As a geneticist who dealt with all aspects of molecular biological investigations on plants, she was also a pioneer in the promotion and supervision of interdisciplinary doctoral theses on ethical questions at the then Faculty of Biology in cooperation with the Ethics Centre.

On Saturday 2nd March 2019, groups from around the world organised over 300 events to celebrate, promote and spread the use of open data. In this blog, we wrap up the ninth edition of Open Data Day with a summary of all that happened across the globe, as well as a look ahead to the future.
This year’s edition saw a total of 325 events registered in the opendataday.org map around the world, with a record total of 26 events in Nepal, and 57 events in Japan! This shows that Open Data Day is well established and a growing community.

Die Arbeitsgruppe „Kolloide und Nanooptik“ um Prof. Dr. Matthias Karg am Institut für Physikalische Chemie hat eine einfache und zugleich präzise Technik entwickelt, um hochgeordnete Teilchenschichten zu entwickeln. Sie nutzen winzig kleine, weiche und deformierbare Polymerkugeln mit einer hydrogelartigen Struktur. Hydrogele sind wassergequollene dreidimensionale Netzwerke. Solche Strukturen kennt man zum Beispiel von Superabsorbern in Babywindeln, die in der Lage sind, große Mengen an Wasser zu binden.

In der Klasse für Naturwissenschaften und Medizin wurden Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. Detlev Riesner, emeritierter Professor für Physikalische Biologie an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf und Mitgründer des Biotech-Unternehmens Qiagen, sowie Professor Dr. med. Wolfram Trudo Knoefel, Direktor der Klinik für Allgemein-, Viszeral- und Kinderchirurgie am Universitätsklinikum Düsseldorf und Inhaber des Lehrstuhls Allgemeine und Viszeralchirurgie an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf aufgenommen. Die Nutzbarmachung von Licht ist eine der zentralen technologischen Schlüsselfragen für die Zukunft. Licht ist eine der nachhaltigsten Energiequellen überhaupt: Es kann über photovoltaische Zellen direkt in elektrischen Strom umgewandelt werden; hocheffiziente Leuchtdioden (LED) sind auf dem Siegeszug nicht nur in modernen Displays, sondern auch für die energiesparende Beleuchtung; die Optoelektronik, vor allem sogenannte optische Computer, verspricht für die Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik deutliche Geschwindigkeitsvorteile.

1919 wurden Teile der Düsseldorfer Kunstgewerbeschule in die Kunstakademie integriert. Diese Fusion war das Ergebnis eines längeren, von Peter Behrens und Wilhelm Kreis forcierten, kontrovers diskutierten Prozesses, in dem die Architektur- und kunstgewerbliche Ausbildung in Düsseldorf gestärkt werden sollte. Noch vor Gründung des Weimarer Bauhauses waren hier Bedingungen für eine Reform der Kunstakademie geschaffen worden, in der ein wesentlich auf die Malerei fixierter Anspruch auf künstlerische Freiheit an den sozialen und ökonomischen Konstellationen relativiert wurde.
