Today, the Wikimedia Foundation, the global nonprofit that hosts Wikipedia, announced that two new members have joined its Board of Trustees: Maciej Artur Nadzikiewicz and Christel Steigenberger. In addition, current community-and-affiliate selected Trustees Dr. Victoria Doronina and Lorenzo Losa have also been reappointed to the Board for another term.

On 19-20 November 2024, we were honored to be invited to speak at the Centre of Excellence for National Security (CENS) Conference on Distortions, Rumours, Untruths, Misinformation and Smears (DRUMS) in Singapore.

The Centre of Excellence for National Security (CENS) is a constituent research unit of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.The centre conducts inter-disciplinary research within the broad domains of cyber, disinformation, hybrid threats, and social resilience.

Like a double-edged sword, advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) hold both promising capabilities and risks that could negatively impact many sectors, particularly in political aspects. In the electoral context, AI holds the promise of enhancing the electoral process by improving security, reliability, and efficiency, making elections more fair, inclusive, and accessible. Yet, it also poses significant challenges, particularly in the political information environment, where it may erode trust in democratic institutions and procedures.  

At the Internet Governance Forum, an annual event for multistakeholder policy dialogue on issues of Internet governance, the Datasphere Initiative brought together researchers and regulators designing or studying sandboxes to share their experiences on their use and potential as an example of the “multistakeholder approach” in practice.

In the first week of December, we had the opportunity and the pleasure to participate in the Open America event in Brazil, which brings together prestigious international meetings dedicated to the research, publication and use of open data on topics such as transparency, access to information, open government, civic technologies, data journalism, digital government, accountability and equity.
