Surveillance is coming: Hong Kong residents are rushing to download virtual private network apps after the Chinese government announced it intends to pass a new national security law covering the region, the South China Morning Post reports. Residents are worried that the Chinese government will restrict Internet access and put new surveillance measures in place in the quasi-independent region.

Have you found yourself having to work from home during the COVID crisis when you would have previously gone to ‘work’, whether in an office, co-worker space or another kind of environment?

​Researchers at the Digital Ethnography Research Centre at RMIT University are conducting a research project to examine the role of digital technology and practices for Australian households who have had to work from home during the COVID pandemic.

This project explores the way mobile devices and networked connectivity are embedded in the routinized night-time practices and situational awareness of urban pedestrians. More specifically, through digital and haptic ethnography we investigate how mobile interfaces affect the perception of safety and risk in urban space, particularly at night, and detail how mobile devices are embodied as tools for connection, comfort and safety.
