Fake news, hate speech and (foreign?) disinformation operations are not forgotten, nor are the devastating effects of the Cambridge Analytica and other IT-supported targeting practices on elections or referenda. Against the backdrop of computational propaganda, digital voter manipulation and nefarious disinformation online, we might be worrying about upcoming elections and the future of democracy.
With all the excitement about the role of technology in contributing to social change and improved development outcomes across Africa, it is easy to forget that only 11% of the world’s Internet subscribers are Africans, while only 35.2% of Africans use the Internet. An effective science and innovation system in any country, and globally, I believe, depends on strong basic research and higher education infrastructure.
On December 6th 2018, the Internet Society Zimbabwe Chapter held an Internet of Things (IoT) meetup supported by the Beyond the Net Small Grants, a programme intented to assist the Internet Society Chapters with financial support to organize initiatives that contribute to the development of their communities.

Der ausgewiesene Comic-Kenner hat seine Expertise bereits zweimal der HHU zur Verfügung gestellt. Im Februar 2017 stellte er in einem Gastvortrag Überlegungen an zu der Frage „Worauf der Comic aufbaut“, und im Juli 2017 nahm er gemeinsam mit der Wissenschaftlerin Dr. Nina Mahrt und dem Comic-Künstler Simon Schwartz an einer Podiumsdiskussion teil, die sich der Frage widmete „Womit kann der Comic sich beschäftigen?“ Auch in Publikationen hat sich Platthaus dem Thema des grafischen Erzählens gewidmet, so beispielsweise in seinem 1998 erschienen Buch Im Comic vereint.
