‘It is important to approach open data and open technologies with an open mindset. Citizen- and farmer-generated data can lead to major breakthrough in policy making, providing insights and evidence for better informed environmental management and nature conservation. In the context of climate adaptation and mitigation, open data can also become a powerful tool in the hands of communities of practice, advocacy groups and small companies which can use it to generate solutions that address problems at regional, national and global level.’

Not surprisingly it has been a busy 4 months in IoT, and IoT-related work in IETF has been buzzing right along. This post is intended to highlight some of these activities, and to provide a guide to relevant sessions scheduled during the upcoming IETF 103 meeting in Bangkok.

The Internet Society Nominations Committee is now inviting nominations for candidates to serve on the Internet Society Board of Trustees.
In 2019, Internet Society Chapters and the IETF will each select one Trustee, and our Organization Members will select two Trustees. Following an orientation program, all new Trustees will begin 3-year terms commencing with the Internet Society Annual General Meeting in July.

Two weeks ago, the Editorial Board of the New York Times published a piece predicting that the Internet is heading for a breakup.
Based on the comments made by Alphabet Chairman Eric Schmidt during a private event the Times set out to paint a picture of a world with three Internets.

Broadband for themselves: Rural Maine residents are looking into ways to create their own community broadband networks because of a lack of service in some areas, the Press Herald reports. About 15 percent of the state’s residents don’t have access to 25 Mbps broadband service. A project in the St. Croix Valley would create Maine’s first publicly-owned broadband network.

Komplexe Quantensysteme aus der Chemie, der Festkörper- oder der Hochenergiephysik sollen durch Quantencomputer simuliert werden, um ihre Eigenschaften besser erforschen zu können. Bisher existieren kleine Implementierungen mit wenigen „Qubits“, mit denen schon erste Rechenprobleme gelöst werden können. Ein Qubit ist die kleinste Informationseinheit in einem Quantencomputer und besteht aus einem Quantensystem, das bei einer Messung zwei mögliche Ergebnisse liefern kann – also ein Bit –, aber nur auf Grundlage der Quantenmechanik vollständig beschreibbar ist.

Starting next weekend, the Internet Engineering Task Force will be in Bangkok for IETF 103, where around 1,000 engineers will discuss open Internet standards and protocols. The week begins on Saturday, 3 November, with a Hackathon and Code Sprint. The IETF meeting itself begins on Sunday and goes through Friday.
