This is my first week in my new role as Chief Executive of Open Knowledge International.
Digital skills and data use have always been a personal passion, and I can’t wait to work alongside and meet so many talented people fighting for a more open world. It is a privilege to be part of an organisation that has set the global standard for genuinely free and open sharing of information, building on the vision of founder Dr Rufus Pollock who wants to create an open information age.

Easier encryption? Google engineers have created a new encryption regime that can run on cheap and underpowered smartphones, Wired.com reports. The Google effort takes established cryptographic tools and implements them in a more efficient way.

Tobias Matzner is professor for “Media, Algorithms, and Society“ at the department of media studies at Paderborn University in Germany. His work combines theories of (digital) media and technologies with approaches from social theory, cultural studies, and political philosophy. This keynote lecture takes place in the context of the Graduate Workshop “Sisterhood on Twitter? The 1st of February was DNS Flag Day, which is an initiative of several DNS vendors and operators to address the problems of DNS name server implementations that are not in compliance with long-established DNS standards. This is causing the DNS to not only be unnecessarily slow and inefficient, but prevent operators from deploying new functionality including mechanisms to protect against DDoS attacks.

Last year, we published “The Dawn of New Digital Rights for Finnish Citizens,” about the launch of the New Digital Rights MOOC, a collaboration between Open Knowledge Finland and the Internet Society’s Finland Chapter.

Die Abteilung für Biologische Psychologie und Sozialpsychologie (Leitung: Prof. Dr. Bettina Pause) untersucht die Bedeutung des Körpergeruchs in sozialen Situationen. Dieser enthält eine Fülle von Informationen, die dem Menschen in seinem Alltag nicht immer bewusst werden. Redewendungen wie „jemanden gut riechen können“ oder „sich gegenseitig beschnuppern“ haben wissenschaftlich betrachtet Hand und Fuß.

Die Bundesregierung sieht die Forschungserkenntnisse des Projekts ABIDA (Assessing Big Data) als einen Beitrag zur weiteren Entwicklung ihrer Strategie zur Künstlichen Intelligenz an. Im Rahmen einer Kleinen Anfrage (BT-Drs. 19/4473) hatte die FDP-Bundestagsfraktion unter anderem gefragt, inwieweit der Diskriminierungsschutz durch und bei Algorithmen Teil der Strategie Künstliche Intelligenz der Bundesregierung sei.
