Der Begriff „PUVA“ steht für „Psoralen“ und „UV-A-Strahlung“. Die Psoralene sind pflanzliche Naturstoffe, die aus Doldenblütlern, wie zum Beispiel dem Riesenbärenklau, gewonnen werden können. Mit psoralenhaltigen Pflanzenextrakten wurden bereits im alten Ägypten Hauterkrankungen behandelt. Die moderne medizinische Nutzung begann in der 1950er Jahren. Von da an wurden sie für die lichtabhängige Therapie von Hauterkrankungen wie Schuppenflechte und Weißfleckenkrankheit eingesetzt.
