“Are you interested in connecting to the internet without a physical SIM card?” A video circulating in Lebanon discusses how the country’s two state-affiliated telecommunications companies, Alfa and Touch, have launched their electronic SIM (eSIM) services.

This service isn’t new, neither globally nor in Lebanon. Alfa introduced eSIMs as early as 2019, and about four years later, Touch did the same, both companies told SMEX.

Artificial intelligence (“AI”) is the craze. From pet shop owners to Fortune 500 companies, AI is being used to farm data and analyze facial gestures of consumers. But concerns are growing. The U.S. Surgeon General, for instance, has suggested a warning label be affixed to social media -- which often uses AI. As a result, the E.U. recently passed an Act regulating AI. The 74th Annual International Communication Association (ICA) conference was held on the Gold Coast in Queensland from 20-24 June, where DMRC members from across Australia showcased their research around the 2024 theme of ‘Communication and Global Human Rights’.

To keep a backup SIM card during periods of poor network performance, I bought two SIMs from the only mobile operators in Lebanon, Touch and Alfa. 

To my surprise, I was forcibly subscribed to a paid ringtone service on my Alfa line that I did not sign up for.

Unknown to many users, activating the Alfa SIM automatically enrolls them in the “Melody” service, a subscription that costs $0.24 per month. This is the cost of 2 minutes of local call time and 12 text messages.
