Seit mehr als vier Jahrzehnten wird der Wirkstoff Fluoxetin beim Menschen zur Behandlung von Depressionen und weiteren psychischen Erkrankungen eingesetzt. Jetzt könnte das Medikament auch im Kampf gegen Covid-19 zum Einsatz kommen. Wie eine Studie von Virologen und Chemikern der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) zeigt, hemmt Fluoxetin die Vermehrung der Viren vom Typ SARS-CoV-2 deutlich. Nach Ansicht der Wissenschaftler bietet es sich deshalb vor allem zur frühen Behandlung von infizierten Patienten an, die einer der bekannten Risikogruppen angehören.
