Einzeln betrachtet macht Antarktischer Krill (Euphausia superba) keinen großen Eindruck. Mit einer Körperlänge von maximal sechs Zentimetern, einem Gewicht von gerade einmal zwei Gramm und seiner transparenten Haut wirkt er wenig spektakulär. Dabei spielt Krill eine zentrale Rolle für das Leben im Südpolarmeer. Milliarden dieser kleinen Krebstiere bilden nämlich riesige Schwärme, die sich über mehrere Quadratkilometer erstrecken können, und sind die wichtigste Nahrungsquelle für viele Raubtiere.

Hitze und Landnutzung: Bienen leiden besonders

Die Zahl und Vielfalt der Insekten ist weltweit rückläufig. Studien deuten darauf hin, dass sich ihre Biomasse seit den 1970er Jahren fast halbiert hat. Zu den Hauptursachen dafür gehören der Verlust von Lebensräumen – etwa durch Landwirtschaft oder Verstädterung – und der Klimawandel.

Manche stehen vielleicht kurz vor einer Zellteilung, andere differenzieren sich aus, wieder andere sind im Begriff, sich an veränderte Umweltbedingungen anzupassen. Gerade mit Blick auf Krankheitserreger ist es der Forschung wichtig, diese Vielfalt innerhalb einer Bakterienpopulation so gut wie möglich zu verstehen. Denn dieses Wissen kann dabei helfen, verbesserte Therapien zu entwickeln.

USI Tiebreak-Tournament

A USI tiebreak tournament was held for the first time on 30.04.2025. The tournament was played in the women’s singles, men’s singles and doubles competitions.
Theresa TSCHAUKO won the women’s competition ahead of Tanja TSCHEINIG. Niclas DÖNGES beat Gerd TATZER in the men’s singles. Jan SCHWIDDESSEN and Niclas DÖNGES were crowned doubles winners. Lucas ROGER and Gerd TATZER came second in the doubles. Bronze went to the pairing of Manuel KÜNSTNER and Philipp KNEISSL.
