Topologische Quantenmaterialien gelten als Hoffnungsträger für die Hightech der Zukunft. Der Nachweis ihrer außergewöhnlichen Eigenschaften war bisher jedoch sehr aufwendig. Jetzt haben Forschende des Exzellenzclusters ct.qmat eine experimentelle Methode entwickelt, mit der sich zweidimensionale topologische Materialien im Schnelltest systematisch nachweisen lassen. Das könnte der boomenden Materialklasse zum Durchbruch verhelfen. Die Ergebnisse wurden als Titelbeitrag im Fachjournal Physical Review Letters veröffentlicht.

An der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) können gleich zwei neue Graduiertenkollegs an den Start gehen. Die DFG hat die Einrichtung der Kollegs nach einem strengen Begutachtungsprozess bewilligt und diese Entscheidung am 10. Mai 2024 bekanntgegeben.

Im April präsentierte die ESA im Astronautentrainingszentrum bei Köln ihre nächste Astronautengeneration: Sechs neue Absolventinnen und Absolventen der Grundausbildung zum Astronauten wurden vorgestellt. Darunter ist auch Katherine Bennell-Pegg. Die Australierin studierte im Wintersemester 2008/09 an der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg den europäischen Master in Space Science and Technology, kurz SpaceMaster. Für den Ausbildungsplatz zur Astronautin wurde sie aus etwa 22.500 Bewerbungen ausgewählt. Einer ihrer ersten offiziellen Termine war am 27.
