KKUkraine’s turbulent history, with its recurring Russian interventions, is also reflected in its language. Ukrainian linguist Olena Synchak is investigating how this is expressed in the use of feminine terms. She is supported by means of a highly competitive MSCA4Ukraine Postdoctoral Fellowship awarded by the European Commission. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has exploded in the public consciousness in the past few years and Caribbean governments, like many others around the world, are grappling with how to best exploit this groundbreaking technology for the good of the region and its people. AI’s potential should not be overstated, but with projected impacts on the economy, development, and everyday life, the technology is slated to radically reshape how we interact with the world around us, and with these new realities come new threats.

As an agile approach and tool, sandboxes enable new technologies to be tested in controlled environments before releasing to the broader market, serving as vital tools for fostering innovation while managing associated risks. While sandboxes are gaining increasing attention globally, their application and impact in Asia remain understudied, despite the region’s significant role in global digital governance and technological advancement. 

Tonight’s attack on Italian investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, whose car was destroyed by an explosive device, is a stark reminder of the growing threats faced by journalists – even in Western Europe. Ranucci, who hosts RAI’s investigative programme Report and is a long-time exposer of corruption and organised crime, has previously received many threats because of his work. That the attack occurred on the anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder adds a chilling dimension, reminding us of the persistent dangers that investigative journalists face in Europe.

AI and open data are a natural and powerful combination that promises to dramatically improve how citizens access public information, but the community is still working to make this a reliable reality.

Digitalisierung ist nach wie vor ein zentrales Thema unserer Zeit – dies geht aus dem aktuellen Digitalbarometer des Bayerischen Forschungsinstituts für Digitale Transformation (bidt) der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften hervor. Die Studie zeigt eine relativ große Offenheit in Deutschland für neue technische Entwicklungen. Digitale Kompetenzen werden von über 80 Prozent der Menschen im privaten Alltag für wichtig erachtet. Gleichzeitig gibt eine Mehrheit von 61 Prozent an, dass dem Thema Digitalisierung in Deutschland zu wenig Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wird.
