At the upcoming conference of the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST), which takes place from 8–11 September in Krakow, several members of the Department of Society, Knowledge and Politics (SoKPol) will present their ongoing research. Our contributions cover the wide range of themes addressed at the department, from public health to welfare algorithms and from national accounts data to wildlife conservation.
Department staff are involved in organizing three conference panels. Anja Bauer convenes the panel “Statistical Harmonization and Standardization: Constructing and Contesting Comparability“. Victoria Meklin is one of the organizers of the panel “Toward Biomedical and Health Testing Studies? Reassembling Testing Practices and Health Futures“. Erik Aarden is involved in running the panel “Ecology, Species, NHA“.
Members of the department also make various other contributions. Kai Strycker presents his paper “Dual Use Entanglements: The Civilian Ariane-6 as a Military-Strategic Industrial Infrastructure“. Victoria Meklin presents “Making School Testing a Problem: Problematization, Preparedness, and Covid-19 Testing Regimes in Austria’s Education System“. Julia Malik contributes her paper “Coding Welfare: How Data Infrastructures and Data Bureaucrats Reconfigure the Administration of Poverty and Deservingness“. Charlotte Benedix presents “Relating Samplified Animals – Notions of Kinship at the EAZA Biobank” and is a co-author of “Making Digital Work Flow: Accomplishing Waste Collection Through Practices of Repair“. Anja Bauer presents “Making Digital Data Count: The Politics of Standardization in the 2025 System of National Accounts”. Erik Aarden presents “Thinking Like a Lapwing: Exploring Multispecies Perspectives on Farmland Bird Conservation“, is a co-author of “Imagining Multispecies Urban Futures Through Endangerment, or: What Can a Hamster-inclusive City Look Like?” and contributes to the roundtable “STS and the Infrastructural Now“.
