Brooklyn, New York, February 27, 2020 — Today, The Governance Lab (The GovLab) at New York University Tandon School of Engineering has opened the call for Mexican municipalities to apply to participate in its Multi-City Challenge 2020, a program that aims to solve urban problems by partnering with the people most affected by these problems – city residents.
A large proportion of India’s farmers live from growing rice, and 70% of them have farms that average smaller than 0.4 hectares – that’s roughly half the size of a football field. Even a single infection can directly endanger their livelihood. Also, in many parts of Asia diseases like bacterial blight in rice are countered by spraying antibiotics and extremely dangerous pesticides that are not approved here in Europe. This means that we urgently need efficient solutions to safeguard the livelihood and the health of the farmers in India.
From advocates, politicians and technologists, calls for doing something about big tech grow louder by the day. Yet concrete ideas are few or failing to reach the mainstream.
This post covers what breaking up big tech would mean and why it’s not enough. I propose an open intervention that will give people a real choice and a way out of controlled walled gardens. Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple are not natural monopolies and we need to regulate them to support competition and alternative business models.
What’s the problem?

Daher werden dringend effiziente Lösungen benötigt, um die Existenz und Gesundheit der indischen Bauern zu sichern.
Die junge Frauengeneration in Deutschland verfügt über eine besonders gute Schulbildung: Trotzdem entscheiden sich Mädchen im Rahmen ihrer Ausbildungs- und Studienwahl noch immer häufig für "typisch weibliche" Berufsfelder oder Studienfächer. Somit schöpfen sie ihre Berufsmöglichkeiten nicht voll aus, und das, obwohl die Aussichten für eine spätere berufliche Karriere in Berufen mit diesen Grundlagen gut sind.
MINT-Studiengänge an der HHU
Im Projekt LipoBiocat („Robuste und selektive lipolytische Biokatalysatoren für industrielle Anwendungen“) forschen Mikrobiologen, organische Chemiker, Strukturbiologen und Bioinformatiker an Biokatalysatoren zur Herstellung von Feinchemikalien und Polymeren. Enzyme sind solche Biokatalysatoren, die zahlreiche Reaktionen beschleunigen oder erst ermöglichen. In der Natur arbeiten sie allerdings in lebenden Zellen und damit bei vergleichsweise milden Reaktionsbedingungen, während in industriellen Prozessen harschere Bedingungen vorherrschen.

“Regulation is coming, and almost everyone—including Facebook—now seems to accept this is a good thing,” says douek. “But two wrongs do not make a right, and regulators themselves should not move fast and break things. The questions and concerns that Facebook raises in this white paper are real and difficult, and regulators should take them seriously.”
Elizabeth Renieris weighed in on why we should not celebrate Google's move to remove third-party cookies from Chrome.
“They’re not really changing underlying tactics [of how they track us], they’re just channeling it all through Google,” Renieris said. “How privacy-preserving is this, actually? What’s Google’s motivation for doing this? Is it to preserve privacy? Potentially, but probably not.”
