Foto: Lakeside Labs und KKThe two researchers in computer science and information technology, respectively, have been nominated for the 9th City of Vienna Hedy Lamarr Prize alongside five other female scientists. The prize recognises outstanding achievements by women in Austria in the field of information technology and will be presented on 18 November 2026 as part of the Digital Days at the Vienna Museum of Science and Technology. One winner is selected each year. The prize is worth EUR 10,000.

Dabei geht es um die Frage, welche Risiken digitale Technologien für Menschen und Gesellschaft mit sich bringen und wie sich diese Risiken begrenzen lassen. Dazu gehören etwa Diskriminierung und Verzerrungen durch digitale Systeme, Des- und Falschinformationen oder Situationen, in denen Nutzer:innen nur eingeschränkt nachvollziehen oder beeinflussen können, wie digitale Technologien eingesetzt werden.

Mit den Starting Grants fördert der Europäische Forschungsrat (ERC) talentierte Nachwuchsforschende, die eine herausragende Erfolgsbilanz und eine exzellente neue Forschungsidee vorweisen können.
Genau das trifft auf den Molekularbiologen Dr. Tom Beneke (35) vom Biozentrum der Universität Würzburg zu. Der ERC zeichnet ihn mit einem der 1,5 Millionen Euro schweren Grants aus, um seine Forschung zu Leishmanien und der von ihnen verursachten Erkrankung weiter voranzutreiben.
