Over the past nine months, I have had the pleasure of working with Monica Granados, Selene Yang, Daniel Ouso and Lily Zhao during the fellows programme. Combining their diverse backgrounds (from government data to mapping data, from post-PhD to graduate student), they have spent many hours together learning how to advocate for open science and how to use the Frictionless Data code and tools to make their data more reproducible.

When people connect to the Internet, they can change the world for the better. And so many people have done just that, using this transformative technology to make strides in education, economic opportunity, and health outcomes. But Internet access is only part of the equation. There’s now a different kind of divide: the gap between those who have the knowledge and skills to use the Internet to empower themselves and their communities – and those who don’t.
Around 120 years ago, US doctor Eugene Lindsay Opie discovered unusual protein deposits in the pancreases of patients with type 2 diabetes that were similar to those found in the brain for many neurodegenerative diseases. Type 2 diabetes is one of the most widespread diseases, formerly known as adult-onset diabetes. The deposits, known as islet amyloid, comprise tiny protein threads known as fibrils. In the case of diabetes, they consist of the peptide hormone IAPP. In the pancreas, they contribute to the death and dysfunction of beta cells that are responsible for producing insulin.

Este martes 2 de junio, la urgencióloga del Hospital Clínico de la U. de Chile y académica de la Facultad de Medicina de nuestro plantel, participó de la nueva transmisión de entrevistas en vivo de Prensa U. de Chile, instancia en que relató en primera persona cómo se vive la pandemia en la urgencia de un recinto hospitalario, y respondió las consultas sobre esta enfermedad enviadas por quienes se conectaron.
El equipamiento, que permitirá al recinto aumentar mensualmente en 100 las atenciones a pacientes graves que requieran ventilación mecánica, llega este martes a Chile y es parte de las primeras 400 unidades -de un total de 485- que el gremio empresarial puso a disposición de la red nacional de salud, insumos que resultan clave para tratar pacientes críticos de COVID-19 que podrían prescindir de un respirador mecánico.
