Ehrendoktorwürde für Jarugu Narasimha Moorthy

Professor Jarugu Narasimha Moorthy hat sich um den Aufbau der institutionellen Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Universität Würzburg und dem Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM) verdient gemacht. Außerdem hat er bedeutende Beiträge zur supramolekularen Materialchemie geleistet, insbesondere zum Aufbau poröser organischer Festkörper und zu photochromen und emittierenden organischen Materialien.

Gefahr für Europas Bienen rückt näher

Die Meldung der Weltorganisation für Tiergesundheit (WOAH) vom 31. August 2026 markiert einen besorgniserregenden Wendepunkt: Der Nachweis der invasiven Tropilaelaps-Milbe in der Türkei bestätigt, dass dieser gefährliche Parasit die Grenze zu Europa erreicht hat. Ursprünglich in Asien beheimatet, hat sich die Milbe über Russland und Georgien scheinbar unaufhaltsam nach Westen ausgebreitet. Für die Westliche Honigbiene (Apis mellifera) stellt dies eine existenzielle Bedrohung dar, die weit über die bekannten Gefahren durch die Varroa-Milbe hinausgeht.

Das Bakterium Chlamydia trachomatis ist weltweit einer der häufigsten Erreger sexuell übertragbarer Infektionen. Biologisch gilt es als hochspezialisierter „Nährstoffdieb“: Da Chlamydien die Fähigkeit zur eigenständigen Vermehrung außerhalb einer Wirtszelle verloren haben, kapern sie menschliche Stoffwechselprodukte – insbesondere Sphingolipide – für ihre eigene Entwicklung. In der Wirtszelle erschaffen sie sich ein abgeschirmtes Heim, die sogenannte Inklusion.

With mathematical precision and a passion for data, Olivia Pfeiler is helping to shape the future of artificial intelligence. A graduate of the University of Klagenfurt, she studied Engineering Mathematics and Romance Languages and Literature, before going on to complete a PhD in Engineering Mathematics. She has been working for many years at KAI – the Competence Centre for Automotive and Industrial Electronics in Villach, where she now heads the data science team as Head of Data Science.

Woher stammen die heute rund 100 Arten der Stärlinge, und wie haben sie sich über Nord- und Südamerika ausgebreitet? Dr. Axel Arango Garcia und Professor Chaitanya S. Gokhale vom Lehrstuhl für Computational and Theoretical Biology (CCTB) der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) haben die Evolutionsgeschichte dieser Vogelfamilie rekonstruiert. Ihre Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Vorfahren der heutigen Arten höchstwahrscheinlich aus Nordamerika stammten und sich über Millionen von Jahren schrittweise nach Süden ausbreiteten.
