It’s being called the world’s biggest work-from-home experiment. With concerns growing over the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus, schools and businesses around the world are implementing contingency plans that encourage distance learning and work from home.
Desmond Patton discusses the importance of meaningful interaction with the people behind data with the authors of Data Feminism.
“It became really clear to me that we needed to create a new approach to social media data that could really grasp culture, context and nuance. For the primary reason of not misinterpreting what’s being said.”
Desmond Patton joined the MIT CMSW podcast to discuss the promise and challenge of eliciting context in social media posts with natural language processing.
The 2019–2020 academic year marks the twentieth anniversary of the Cyberlaw Clinic, which is based at the Berkman Klein Center. To commemorate the occasion, we spoke with Kendra Albert (Harvard Law J.D. ‘16), clinical instructor in the Cyberlaw Clinic and former student in the Clinic about their takeaways from that experience, their current work, and what they’re the proudest of in their time at the Clinic.
As some countries restrict and replace content, are we headed toward a world of multiple internets? David Weinberger argues that we are already there.
“So on one hand, yes, the dream [of an open internet] is dead. On the other hand, that statement causes us, I think, to overlook the quite often very positive transformation that the internet has brought about: in our sense of what it means to speak in public, what it means to connect in public.”
Pew Research Center and Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center canvassed technology experts in the summer of 2019 to gain their insights about the potential future effects of people’s use of technology on democracy.
Since the discovery of submarine hydrothermal vents around 40 years ago, these natural chemical reactors have been a focus for evolutionary researchers searching for the origin of life. The vents emit hot water containing minerals, including simple but reactive chemical substances such as hydrogen gas (H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Conditions like these could have resulted in the very first biochemical reactions, and thus in the emergence of the first free living cells.

We receive updates about the spread of the virus to certain regions via media coverage almost every hour. If you have recently been in such areas and are seriously concerned that you may be one of those affected, it’s recommend, as a precautionary measure to protect your health and to avoid further infections – regardless of whether you are suffering from symptoms of the disease – you should stay at home for the time being, after consulting your direct superior in the faculties, the administration, the library, the computation centre etc. of our university.

Brooklyn, New York, February 27, 2020 — Today, The Governance Lab (The GovLab) at New York University Tandon School of Engineering has opened the call for Mexican municipalities to apply to participate in its Multi-City Challenge 2020, a program that aims to solve urban problems by partnering with the people most affected by these problems – city residents.
A large proportion of India’s farmers live from growing rice, and 70% of them have farms that average smaller than 0.4 hectares – that’s roughly half the size of a football field. Even a single infection can directly endanger their livelihood. Also, in many parts of Asia diseases like bacterial blight in rice are countered by spraying antibiotics and extremely dangerous pesticides that are not approved here in Europe. This means that we urgently need efficient solutions to safeguard the livelihood and the health of the farmers in India.
From advocates, politicians and technologists, calls for doing something about big tech grow louder by the day. Yet concrete ideas are few or failing to reach the mainstream.
This post covers what breaking up big tech would mean and why it’s not enough. I propose an open intervention that will give people a real choice and a way out of controlled walled gardens. Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple are not natural monopolies and we need to regulate them to support competition and alternative business models.
What’s the problem?
