Could Bitcoin technology help science?

Andy Extance at Nature: “…The much-hyped technology behind Bitcoin, known as blockchain, has intoxicated investors around the world and is now making tentative inroads into science, spurred by broad promises that it can transform key elements of the research enterprise. How does a Multistakeholder Co-op work?

Lauren and Phil: The Ecological Land Co-operative (ELC) was set up to address the lack of affordable sites for ecological land-based livelihoods. A life on the land is a dream for many, but one in which the barriers are high, and the ELC recognised that this needed to be addressed.
The ELC develops affordable, residential smallholdings to new entrants to ecological agriculture. Their approach aims to overcome two key barriers: high land prices and planning permission.

New York City moves to create accountability for algorithms

Lauren Kirchner at ArsTechnica: “The algorithms that play increasingly central roles in our lives often emanate from Silicon Valley, but the effort to hold them accountable may have another epicenter: New York City. Last week, the New York City Council unanimously passed a bill to tackle algorithmic discrimination—the first measure of its kind in the country.

Algorithms can deliver public services, too

Diane Coyle in the Financial Times: “As economists have been pointing out for a while, the combination of always-online smartphones and matching algorithms (of the kind pioneered by Nobel Prize-winning economist Richard Thaler and others) reduces the transaction costs involved in economic exchanges. As Ronald Coase argued, transaction costs, because they limit the scope of exchanges in the market, help explain why companies exist.

How the Index Card Cataloged the World

Daniela Blei in the Atlantic: “…The index card was a product of the Enlightenment, conceived by one of its towering figures: Carl Linnaeus, the Swedish botanist, physician, and the father of modern taxonomy.
