AIDS kann inzwischen recht erfolgreich durch eine Kombinationstherapie aus verschiedenen Medikamenten behandelt werden, so dass die Patienten mehr oder weniger symptomfrei sind. Allerdings treten häufig Medikamentresistenzen auf, die es notwendig machen, die verabreichten Präparate anzupassen; im schlimmsten Fall wird dadurch eine Behandlung unmöglich.
