Podcast: How did the advent of agriculture impact humanity?

For the last 150,000 or so years of human evolution, not a whole lot changed. That is, until about 10,000 years ago, when in the blink of an eye we began organizing societies in very, very different ways. We went from small bands of hunter-gatherers to massive state societies; from having a relatively low ecological impact to devastating the natural environments we existed in; from relatively horizontal organization to extreme hierarchy and finely articulated division of labor.

Najnowszy przegląd linków o prawie autorskim udowadnia, że nie samą reformą prawa autorskiego powinniśmy się interesować. Parlament Europejski podjął kolejne, choć niedostateczne, kroki w celu zniesienia geoblockingu, Komisja Europejska planuje stworzyć listę stron www naruszających prawa własności intelektualnej, a zmiany w dyrektywie o reuse to tylko kwestia czasu. Poza tym prezentujemy ciekawe polskie kazusy prawne – prokuraturę mającą problemy z prawem autorskim oraz spór prawnoautorski wokół zmian na wystawie w Muzeum II Wojny Światowej. Zapraszamy do lektury.

Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism

Book by Safiya Umoja Noble: “Run a Google search for “black girls”—what will you find? “Big Booty” and other sexually explicit terms are likely to come up as top search terms. But, if you type in “white girls,” the results are radically different. The suggested porn sites and un-moderated discussions about “why black women are so sassy” or “why black women are so angry” presents a disturbing portrait of black womanhood in modern society.

Mietshäuser Syndikat: the network for sustainable co-housing projects

Here’s the problem: The founders of “Mietshäuser Syndikat” (tenements syndicate), a network of cohousing projects in Germany, observed many self-organized cohousing projects struggle and fail. Some couldn’t overcome the challenges in the critical early phases, in terms of dealing with legal issues, finances, and group dynamics, while others created commercially exploited housing projects against their original intentions.

The People’s Right to Know and State Secrecy

Dorota Mokrosinska at the Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence: “Among the classic arguments which advocates of open government use to fight government secrecy is the appeal to a “people’s right to know.” I argue that the employment of this idea as a conceptual weapon against state secrecy misfires.
