In an era where technological advancements seem to outpace our ability to regulate and understand them, societies worldwide find themselves in a constant state of catching up. We are often reacting to the latest innovations, scrambling to implement policies that address unforeseen consequences. As a society, we need to do better and rethink our traditional tools and processes. What if, instead of playing catch-up, we could proactively shape how technology is developed and deployed? Enter the concept of sandboxes – a transformative approach to policy-making, regulation and innovation.

In July 2024, peacebuilders, activists, academics, third sector and staff from intergovernmental organisations such as the United Nations and the OSCE, came together for a policy hackathon at the Austrian Forum for Peace Conference in Burgenland near the Hungarian border.

Brazil’s G20 presidency has highlighted the need for policymakers to deal with data differently and rethink traditional modes of digital policy-making. It was therefore timely that government, private sector and civil society representatives met for an inaugural meeting of the Global Sandboxes Forum to share their expectations and vision for new models of data collaboration.

Halbleiterkomponenten arbeiten meist mit einer maximal nutzbaren Frequenz von einigen Gigahertz – das entspricht mehreren Milliarden Rechenoperationen pro Sekunde. Infolgedessen sind moderne Systeme auf mehrere Chips angewiesen, um die Rechenaufgaben aufzuteilen, weil sich die Geschwindigkeit der einzelnen Chips nicht weiter erhöhen lässt. Würde man jedoch Licht (Photonen) anstelle von Elektrizität (Elektronen) in Computerchips verwenden, könnten diese bis zu 1000 Mal schneller sein.
