Focus on the in-between: Conference on “Shifting the Lens. Perspectives on Literature, Media, and Culture” for Phd Students at the University of Klagenfurt

Francesco Scatena/AdobestockUnder the title Shifting the Lens. Perspecitves on Literature, Media, and Culture, doctoral students at the University of Klagenfurt are inviting to an international conference on in-between spaces, translation processes and intermedial perspectives from 14 to 16 May.

The bilingual programme boasts a variety of papers by young academics from national and international universities such as Birmingham, Bern, L’Aquila, Prague, Tübingen and Venice. Organised into nine panels, scheduled over three days, the speakers will analyse different thematic focal points in German or English, such as questions on imagery in literature, linguistic challenges and didactic possibilities of the intermedial or transcultural memory work.
The aim of the conference is to strengthen the literary and cultural studies subjects, in particular English, German, Romance, and Slavic studies, and to promote academic exchange across disciplinary boundaries. The doctoral programme COINT (Comparative Literature, Intermediality, and Transculturality), which is headed by Angela Fabris, provides a place – the first one in Austria – at Klagenfurt University for these discourses. The conference Shifting the Lens offers a framework for discussing questions of transcultural translations, linguistic translation processes and transmedial narration on a large scale for the first time. It also creates a valuable opportunity to further consolidate the transdisciplinary doctoral programme in the intercultural Alps-Adriatic region and to deepen existing scientific cooperation and establish new networks through academic exchange with partner universities. The programme is also an outstanding example of the international orientation of the University of Klagenfurt in research and teaching.
The conference is organised by Agnese Ferro, Elena Ippendorf, Magdalena Mühlböck and Tamara Urach and will be framed by three pertinent keynote lectures: Charlotte Stevens (Birmingham) will speak on Wednesday, 14 May about adaptations of video games in Chinese television, Cornelia Klettke (Potsdam) will speak on Thursday, 15 May about aesthetic transfer processes and Werner Michler (Salzburg) will analyse translation processes in exile by means of the example of Stefan Zweig on Friday, 16 May. The entire event is open to the public, but registration at coint2025 [at] aau [dot] at is requested.
