PhD candidate Dominique Carlon has been announced as the winner of the inaugural ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) Higher Degree Research (HDR) Student Essay Prize.
Higher Degree Research students from the ADM+S were invited to submit a 2,000 word essay to challenge existing perspectives or suggest new directions of research in automated decision-making (ADM) in the field of news and media.

From the findings of the Media Pluralism Monitor to the European Media Freedom Act”, held at the European Parliament’s premises in Brussels.

“The initiative has both a high symbolic and normative value, but it needs more attention from those communities it aims to protect and empower. To make sure that the European Media Freedom Act contributes to our public sphere, we need to start the discussion now.”

Egal, ob Einzeller oder Säugetier, Plankton oder Mammutbaum: Wachstum ist ein Grundprinzip jeglichen Lebens auf dieser Erde. Und Ausgangspunkt dieses Wachstums ist in der Regel die Zelle: Sie muss dafür innerhalb kurzer Zeit ihre Bestandteile und Inhaltsstoffe verdoppeln, damit sie sich anschließend teilen und das Wachstum in Gang setzen kann.

Soeben wurde die neue Ausgabe des renommierten THE World University Ranking 2023 veröffentlicht, welches in diesem Jahr 1800 forschungsintensive Universitäten aus 104 Ländern vergleicht. Darin verbessert sich die Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 26 Plätze und erreicht mit Platz 139 ihre bislang beste Platzierung. Auch im deutschlandweiten Vergleich steigt sie vom 16. auf den 13. Platz auf, in Bayern liegt sie hinter den beiden Münchener Exzellenzuniversitäten auf Platz 3.

Exakt 26.642 Studierende sind bis jetzt (Stand 13.10.2022) an der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) für ein Studium eingeschrieben. Zum Vergleich: Im vergangenen Jahr waren es kurz vor Beginn der Vorlesungen 27.092.

Die Forscherin erhielt die mit 2.000 Euro dotierte Auszeichnung für ihre Arbeiten im Fach Psychologie zu der Frage, wie Geschlechterstereotypen die menschliche Schmerzwahrnehmung beeinflussen. Sie untersuchte dazu Auswirkungen von Geschlechterrollen und Geschlechtsstereotypen auf die subjektive Wahrnehmung und die neurophysiologische Verarbeitung von Schmerz. „Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen haben einerseits grundlagentheoretische Relevanz, können aber auch direkt in der klinischen Praxis angewendet werden“, unterstreicht die Wissenschaftlerin.
