AI safety research is increasingly global, yet much of it remains concentrated in a small number of institutions in the US and Europe. On 27 March, the Policy Innovation Lab and AI Safety South Africa co-hosted a workshop at Stellenbosch University to strengthen South Africa’s role in this space. The event brought together researchers to share work on AI safety, cooperative AI and AI governance.

Wie lässt sich Vertrauen in generative KI so fassen, dass unterschiedliche Disziplinen anschlussfähig bleiben? Und welche gemeinsamen Forschungsfragen entstehen, wenn Projekte aus Kommunikationswissenschaft, Informatik, Rechtswissenschaft, Psychologie und Wirtschaftsinformatik aufeinander treffen? Im Mittelpunkt der Klausurtagung des bidt-Forschungsschwerpunkts „Generative KI: Trust in Co-Creation“ vom 16. und 17. März 2026 stand genau dieser interdisziplinäre Austausch.
Bereits 1980 wies der Würzburger Nobelpreisträger Professor Klaus von Klitzing mit dem Quanten-Hall-Effekt den ersten topologischen Stromtransport nach. 2006 gelang Professor Laurens Mohlenkamp an der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) der weltweit erste experimentelle Nachweis des Quanten-Spin-Hall-Effekts als intrinsische Materialeigenschaft eines sogenannten topologischen Isolators. Diese beiden topologischen Phänomene schützen den Transport von Elektronen vor Streuung.

Stellenbosch University’s Policy Innovation Lab has joined the Global Network of Internet & Society Centers (NoC), coordinated by the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. This makes SU one of only three members from Africa, and the only South African university represented in the network, says Prof Willem Fourie, head of the Policy Innovation Lab.
