Fast alle Lebewesen besitzen eine innere Uhr, die es ihnen ermöglicht, ihr Verhalten und ihre Körperfunktionen an den natürlichen Rhythmus von Tag und Nacht anzupassen. Dieser sogenannte circadiane Rhythmus wird von einem komplexen Netzwerk aus spezialisierten Nervenzellen gesteuert. Bei der Fruchtfliege, einem zentralen Modellorganismus für die Chronobiologie, besteht dieses Uhrennetzwerk aus etwa 240 Neuronen. Zum Vergleich: Bei Säugetieren, einschließlich des Menschen, sind es Zehntausende.
