Rund 4.300 Pflanzen und Pilzarten und mehr als 6.700 Tierarten: So groß ist die Artenvielfalt nach Expertenschätzungen in den für unsere Region typischen Buchenwäldern. Von allen Lebensraumtypen zu Lande beherbergt der Wald damit die meisten Arten. Doch in jüngster Zeit beobachten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler einen Rückgang der Artenvielfalt auch in heimischen Wäldern.
