I was recently invited to a private workshop on children's online safety policy, where I gave a short presentation about the U.S. legal context. Here are my prepared remarks. Note that they largely avoid giving my personal perspective on hotly-debated areas, such as the interaction between Section 230 and app design features, or proposals for age-verification requirements.

In der Fachsprache heißt dieser Prozess Hämostase. Diese besteht aus zwei Vorgängen: Der Blutstillung, bei der sich Blutplättchen (Thrombozyten) an die Wundränder heften, einen Pfropf bilden und die Verletzung provisorisch abdichten. Und der Blutgerinnung beziehungsweise Gerinnungskaskade, bei der am Ende lange Fasern aus Fibrin gebildet werden, welche gemeinsam mit den Blutplättchen die Wunde fest abdichten.
The Australian Ad Observatory project conducted at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) is working to understand the hidden world of advertising by asking volunteers to donate their Facebook ads.
Professor Daniel Angus, one of the Chief Investigators on the project, says the problem with online advertising is that it is hidden from public view, and so it may break the rules that have been put in place to prevent consumer harm, without being noticed.
