Mohammad GhasempourMitra Jalal Shokuhi is the first student to graduate from the Master’s degree programme in Management, Economics, and Data Science (MEDS) at the University of Klagenfurt. The English-taught programme was introduced in the winter semester of 2023/24.
Mitra Jalal Shokuhi developed an interest in economics at an early age. Through her professional experience, she also discovered her curiosity about data. The Master’s degree programme offered her the opportunity to bring these two fields together in an academic environment and further develop her knowledge and skills for her future career. “I was always interested in economics, and I was introduced to data through my professional experience. Therefore, I decided to pursue what I am interested in in an academic environment and strengthen my knowledge and skills for my career,” Mitra Jalal Shokuhi explains.
Living in Klagenfurt was also a positive experience for her: “Klagenfurt also offers a calm environment where you can focus on your studies while still having fun, especially by going hiking and spending time at the lake.”
Combining economics and data science for future careers
For Paul Schweinzer, MEDS programme director, the first degree completion marks a significant milestone: “With Mitra Jalal Shokuhi, the first student has graduated from the Master’s programme in Management, Economics, and Data Science at the University of Klagenfurt. This is a special moment for us and a welcome confirmation that the MEDS concept is working as intended.”
The programme combines management, economics, and data science to create a distinctive skill set that is currently in high demand. “Our graduates are able to answer complex economic questions using data and derive well-founded decisions. The programme is taught entirely in English, with students working closely with lecturers who are actively engaged in research,” says Schweinzer.
This combination opens up a wide range of career opportunities. Those who can not only analyse data but also interpret it in an economic context find rewarding roles in business, consultancy, the public sector, and research. Graduates also have the option of pursuing a doctoral degree.
“We are currently working to further develop the thematic focus of MEDS, particularly with regard to finance, and to expand the programme through national and international collaborations,” explains Schweinzer. He warmly congratulates Mitra Jalal Shokuhi on completing her degree with a grade of Sehr gut (excellent) and is pleased that MEDS has been able to serve as her springboard for a successful professional future.
International experiences and new perspectives
Alongside the academic content, the international environment was also an important part of Mitra Jalal Shokuhi’s studies. “My personal highlight was being part of an international environment and experiencing life abroad,” she says. In addition to pursuing her professional career, she would like to maintain her connection to academia, as she remains interested in research.
