KKEarly Career Researcher Vianney Kambale received the award at the conference, which took place from 23 to 25 July 2025 in Zimbali, South Africa. Vianney Kambale, who is conducting research as a doctoral student at the Department of Smart Systems Technologies in the Transportation Informatics research group, is attempting to look into the future using data from yesterday and today.
He was honoured for his conference paper on ‘Lag-Horizon Sensitivity Analysis of Knowledge Distillation for Time Series Forecasting: A Case Study on Energy Data Applications’ at the 2025 IEEE Conference on Information Communications Technology and Society (ICTAS).
The foundation of Vianney Kambale’s work lies in the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to Time Series Forecasting. In his doctoral project, Vianney Kambale is developing theoretical frameworks that leverage techniques such as transfer learning, meta-learning, and knowledge distillation to improve the accuracy and quality of time series forecasting in data-scarce and resource-constrained environments. His award-winning work at the conference presents a case study on energy data applications.
