Ein Quantencomputer basiert auf den Gesetzen der Quantenmechanik und besteht aus sogenannten Quantenbits (Qubits), die gleichzeitig im Zustand „0“ und „1“ sein können. Man spricht dann von einem Superpositionszustand.
Mehrere (N) Qubits können in exponentiell vielen (2ᴺ) Zuständen gleichzeitig sein, die starke quantenmechanische Korrelationen, d. h. Verschränkungen, aufweisen. Durch geschickte Manipulation kann diese exponentiell wachsende Anzahl an Möglichkeiten genutzt werden, um Algorithmen durchzuführen, die auf herkömmlichen Rechnern nicht lösbar sind.
Heutige Quantencomputer bauen auf supraleitenden Schaltkreisen oder auf gefangenen Atomen bzw. Elektronen auf. Anwendungsgebiete für Quantencomputer reichen von algebraischen Aufgaben über die Berechnung von Materialeigenschaften bis hin zur Lösung wirtschaftlich relevanter Optimierungsaufgaben.
