Bronze sensation and team spirit: AAU teams shine at the Unisport Austria Championships
A great success for Klagenfurt University sports: at this year’s Unisport Austria Small-Sided Football Championships in Salzburg, the University of Klagenfurt men’s team secured the bronze medal. The women’s team also put in a spirited performance, despite setbacks caused by injuries.
On 20 and 21 June 2026, the Provincial Sports Centre in Salzburg-Rif became the hub of Austrian university football. The University of Klagenfurt was represented by highly motivated teams in both the women’s and men’s competitions.
Men’s team claim a well-deserved bronze medal
The men’s team got off to a strong start in the tournament and, having finished fourth in the group stage, secured their place in the semi-finals on the second day of the tournament. There, they faced a thrilling, evenly matched clash against the University of Innsbruck. After regular time, the score was 1–1 following a top-class match. The outcome had to be decided in a dramatic penalty shoot-out, in which the Innsbruck side ultimately came out on top. However, the Klagenfurt team did not let their heads drop: in the subsequent third-place play-off, the men put on a masterclass. With a commanding 4–0 victory over the University of Graz, the team secured a well-deserved win and brought the much-celebrated bronze medal back to Klagenfurt!
Women’s team show tremendous fighting spirit
The University of Klagenfurt women’s team also showed total commitment right from the start and put up an extremely brave fight against a strong field of competitors. Unfortunately, the team was plagued by a spate of injuries as the tournament progressed. Despite the personnel setbacks, which significantly affected the final result, the Klagenfurt women fought until the very end and finished in a respectable 6th place.

The final of the championships was contested by the hosts, the University of Salzburg, against a selection from the University of Innsbruck. In a thrilling final, the Salzburg team
prevailed and were crowned tournament champions.
