The Nextbike bike rental system is easy to use, cheap and flexible. The Studibike rate allows students to cycle around Klagenfurt and other cities in Austria for EUR 35.50 per year. And here’s how it works: The bikes can be rented via app (Nextbike). A total of 300 bicycles are available for hire across 50 Nextbike rental stations in the Klagenfurt area. Environmentally friendly short trips around town are easily accomplished on an e-scooter. Since June 2019, by agreement with the city administration, several companies have been offering e-scooters for hire in Klagenfurt. All you need is the respective app (Tier, MAX Mobility, or Lime), which lists available scooters in your area. You log on to the scooter via QR scan and you’re ready to go. You’re billed for time, so don’t forget to sign off at the end of the journey.

Private individuals, retailers and producers can drop off surplus food at the Together Points across Carinthia. Goods that can no longer be sold or recycled in a private household can be saved from the dustbin in this way. Every year, Soziale Betriebe Kärnten, an integrative organisation for the long-term unemployed, collects over 1,400 tonnes of second-hand textiles in its recycling containers at over 170 sites across Carinthia. The loveliest items are put on sale in second soul shops in Klagenfurt, Villach and Wolfsberg, while a substantial proportion of the remaining items are recycled; e.g., in the form of specially designed
recycled fashion. Very few pieces are actually disposed of.

Several times a year, the ÖH Klagenfurt hosts a clothes swap in the university’s Aula. The clothes on offer are donated by students and collected year-round to give them a new home at the event. Every swap features a massive and diverse selection, with something to suit every style! Even if you haven’t donated any clothes yourself, everyone is warmly invited to come along and give their wardrobe a sustainable update. The event was born out of a desire to raise awareness of sustainable consumption on campus. True to the motto: Give old clothes a second chance!

Sustainable shopping: Flea markets in Klagenfurt
For those who wish to find a new home for their belongings, or who are looking for antiques, second-hand books and all kinds of other everyday objects, a visit to one of the many flea markets in Klagenfurt and the surrounding area is highly recommended.
The Metro car park hosts a flea market on Saturday evenings, on Sunday and on public holidays; you can visit the indoor flea market in the Siriusstraße every Saturday and Sunday between 8:30 am and 3 pm; and all kinds of second-hand goods are offered in front of the Obi DIY store in the Völkermarkter Straße on Sundays and public holidays.
The Lendhafen in the city centre also transforms into a flea market several times each year! The grand flea market in Viktring is a particular highlight. It takes place twice a year (May and September), attracting visitors from near and far.
