Wirtschaftssanktionen können ein zweischneidiges Schwert sein. Auf der einen Seite senken sie in der Regel, wie beabsichtigt, das Bruttoinlandsprodukt und damit den Wohlstand in den betroffenen Ländern. Auf der anderen Seite können sie jedoch auch bei den sanktionierenden Ländern die Wirtschaft empfindlich treffen. Allerdings ließen sich durch eine geschickte Auswahl der Länder, die an den Sanktionsmaßnahmen beteiligt sind, diese unerwünschten negativen Folgen deutlich abmildern.
