KKMathis Ebbinghaus joined the University of Klagenfurt as Professor of General Sociology in September 2026. Based in the Department of Society, Knowledge and Politics in the Faculty of Social Sciences, he will bring fresh perspectives to research on social movements, political conflict, and collective memory.
How do social movements emerge? What motivates people to stand up for others or challenge the status quo? And how do conflicts and experiences of past injustice continue to influence society today? These are some of the questions at the heart of Mathis Ebbinghaus’s research.
His research to date has explored a wide range of topics, from Black Lives Matter and the events of 6 January at the US Capitol to the social consequences of conflict and violence and different forms of resistance within civil society. He draws on a variety of research methods, combining the analysis of observational data and experiments with interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, and archival research.
“I am particularly interested in connecting fundamental sociological questions with issues of wider social relevance,” says Ebbinghaus.
At the University of Klagenfurt, Mathis Ebbinghaus plans to build on his research into social movements, political conflict, and right-wing mobilisation. He also intends to establish a new research programme on collective memory.
Ebbinghaus: “One of my goals is to raise Klagenfurt’s international profile as a centre for sociological research into social change.”
Ebbinghaus also wants to explore how this international research focus can be linked to issues of regional significance. “I want to develop a research programme examining how collective memories of past injustices shape people’s attitudes and actions today. The debates and disputes over how the past is remembered in Carinthia make the region a particularly interesting setting for this research,” explains Ebbinghaus.
Another key aspect of his new role will be working with his team to establish and develop General Sociology within the Department of Society, Knowledge and Politics, something he is especially looking forward to.
