Global Innovation Index 2021: A Word from the Founder

Since its inception in 2007, the Global Innovation Index (GII) has become a premier reference for measuring a country’s innovation performance. Published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in partnership with the Portulans Institute, the report serves as a cornerstone of economic policymaking, with an increasing number of governments systematically analyzing their annual GII results and designing policy responses to improve their performance.
GII 2021
The Global Innovation Index 2021 (GII) takes the pulse of the most recent global innovation trends and ranks the innovation ecosystem performance of 130 economies. This year’s theme, Tracking Innovation through the COVID-19 Crisis, explores how countries around the world are coping with the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 report presents a new feature: the Global Innovation Tracker, which draws on a select set of indicators, including the effects on research and development expenditures or access to innovation finance, to provide a novel perspective on the pandemic’s impact on global innovation performance.
The 14th edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII) will be released on Monday September 20, 2021 from 13:30 to 15:30 p.m. CEST. The virtual event will present the latest ranking of innovation performance of economies around the world. In addition, heads of state, ministers and business executives will discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the global innovation landscape. You can add the event to your calendar here
Updates from the founder and co-editor
“In the last fourteen years, the Global Innovation Index has established itself as one of the most impactful tools for tracking global innovation trends and the performance of innovation ecosystems across 130 economies.
As the founder and co-editor of the index, I am happy to see the GII being recognized at the highest international level. In underlining the risks to financing innovation as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, earlier this year the GII was referenced by the United Nations Flagship Report on Financing Sustainable Development 2021.
The importance of the GII was also emphasized in the UN Secretary General’s report on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development, which will be considered at the upcoming 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly. On innovation metrics, the report dedicates a separate paragraph to the GII, describing it  as an important guide for policymakers when formulating economic, innovation and intellectual property policy strategies as well as an effective platform for fostering the collection of better innovation metrics.”
