DMRC researcher wins international teaching award

The US-based Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) announced this week that Dr T.J. Thomson, senior lecturer in the QUT School of Communication and chief investigator in the Digital Media Research Centre, is the recipient of the 2022 Linda Shockley Award for Excellence in Teaching.
The Association recognised Dr Thomson for an innovative visual editing typology he created and deploys in the CJB102: Visual Journalism unit he coordinates at QUT.
Dr Thomson said the typology provides a systematic way of approaching editing that guards against arbitrary decision-making and also equips students with the language and principles to describe and justify their editing decisions.
The Association has invited Dr Thomson to present his typology during its annual conference from 3-6 August in Detroit, Michigan, USA. The Association also honored Dr Thomson in 2021 with its Visual Communication Teaching Excellence award for a different unit, CCB102: Multimedia Design, he coordinates at QUT.
The Linda Shockley Award for Excellence in teaching recognises innovative ideas for improving the teaching of editing in any area—from new approaches for teaching traditional areas of grammar to ethical decision-making in student newsrooms to new ways to teach photo and video editing. It is named for Linda Shockley, a former journalist, editor, and through 2020, managing director of the Dow Jones News Fund.
The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication is a nonprofit organization of more than 3,700 educators, students and practitioners from around the globe. Founded in 1912, AEJMC is the oldest and largest alliance of journalism and mass communication educators and administrators at the tertiary level.
The QUT School of Communication and Digital Media Research Centre are ranked first in Australia and 15th globally for media and communication studies, according to the 2022 QS World University Rankings.
