DMRC heavily represented at leading international communication conference

Thirty-two QUT Digital Media Research Centre (DMRC) staff and student members are among thousands of communication scholars presenting at the annual International Communication Association (ICA) conference.
The ICA is the leading academic association for scholars in communication with over 5,000 members, and its annual conference attracts attendees from all over the globe.
QUT is the major platinum sponsor of the conference being held at the Gold Coast from 20 – 24 June 2024.
The DMRC is heavily involved in this year’s conference, supporting 12 pre and post ICA conferences on-campus and hosting 18 ICA-related visitors, in addition to members giving dozens of presentations.
“I’m incredibly excited about the opportunity that such a significant international conference presents for our students and early career scholars”, Professor Dan Angus, DMRC Director.
“Our researchers will have an incredibly significant presence at the conference, with diverse work on everything from labour issues in the media industries, polarisation in news media, societal adoption of generative AI technologies, and digital inclusion in the Asia-Pacific.”
The DMRC counts three ICA fellows amongst its members, a recognition of distinguished scholarly contributions to the broad field of communication – Distinguished Professor Jean Burgess, Professor Amanda Lotz, and Distinguished Emeritus Professor Stuart Cunningham AM.
All three fellows are presenting at ICA24, with Distinguished Professor Jean Burgess delivering the highly prestigious Steve Jones Internet Lecture on ‘Why the GenAI Moment Needs Communication and Media Research’.
Distinguished Professor Burgess leads the QUT Generative AI Lab (GenAI Lab), a new specialist research initiative focused on addressing the emerging social and cultural challenges and possibilities of Generative AI, which is closely aligned with the DMRC and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society.
