IZEW researcher Laura Schelenz was included in the list of 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics. The initiative honors excellent researchers working on the harms and discriminatory effects of emerging technology guided by ethical principles. Mit dem Ziel den Kampf gegen Hatespeech und Desinformationen voranzutreiben, hat die Europäische Union den DSA als Teil eines Gesetzespakets gemeinsam mit dem Digital Markets Act (DMA) auf den Weg gebracht. In Anwendung treten wird der DSA mit dem größeren Teil seiner Vorschriften zum 17. Februar 2024. Durch die Verordnung soll die Rechtslage und das Regulierungsinstrumentarium an die Realitäten des Internets angepasst werden.

For three years, the digilog@bw research network of the state of Baden-Württemberg conducted interdisciplinary research and critical reflection on the influence of digitization on individuals and society. In addition to the IZEW, the network included the University of Mannheim, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and, at the Tübingen site, the Leibniz Institute for Knowledge Media (IWM). The speaker committee consisted of Professor Thomas Fetzer from the University of Mannheim (head), Professor Michael Decker from KIT and PD Dr. Jessica Heesen from the University of Tübingen.

 Over the last months, there have been news reports on young climate activists attacking well known art works like the Mona-Lisa or Van Gogh’s Sunflowers all over Europe. (Aublanc, 2022; Dellatto, 2022; Skinner, 2022; York, 2022) At first glance, this might seem bizarre: Why attack art? Looking into the motives the activists present on their homepage helps shed a different light on the action than media coverage has focussed on.

Over the last two decades, Open Knowledge Foundation worked at the intersection of cutting-edge digital tools and a distributed network of communities and movements to serve the public interest, shaping and democratising the technologies and knowledge of our time, making its powerful combination “ours” and testing them in different fields.

‘Recently, several private and political cloud initiatives emerged in Europe. This paper demonstrates how the sociotechnical imaginaries of three European cloud projects reveal a performative coupling of innovation and political ideas of control, territoriality and sovereignty. I ascertain three elements of the concept of sociotechnical imaginaries (innovation, boundary making and material properties) guiding the empirical analysis.
