Ever smarter video players: Hadi Amirpour receives the Multimedia Rising Star Award at IEEE MMSP 2026

KKHadi Amirpour, Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Technology at the University of Klagenfurt, received the Multimedia Rising Star Award at IEEE MMSP 2026 in Istanbul. In his talk, he demonstrated how video streaming can provide higher perceived quality by making the player more intelligent using self-training.

The Social Life of Things: Handicrafts Made by People on the Move

aau/MüllerSocial scientist Fredy Mora Gámez will join the University of Klagenfurt in October 2026 to launch his ERC Consolidator Grant project, “Handcrafted coalitions: Tantear through digital mapping beyond borders”. HANDigiCRAFT explores the social relationships and forms of knowledge that emerge around objects handcrafted by people on the move. Combining ethnography, collaborative crafting and digital mapping, it investigates how these objects connect people and create possibilities for solidarity across borders.

On September 29, 2026, over a hundred friends, family members, and global colleagues gathered in a virtual room that stretched across countries and continents. They came together to honor the life, vision, and enduring legacy of Bertrand de La Chapelle following his passing in Paris on August 26. Co-organized by his life partner Ayesha Hassan, the Datasphere Initiative, and the Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network, the online gathering provided a warm, open space to hold grief, share laughter, and reflect on a figure whose impact reached every corner of the digital world.

Nobelpreis für den Würzburger Professor Georg Nagel

Die Nachricht erreichte ihn in Italien: Georg Nagel (73) erhält in diesem Jahr den Nobelpreis für Medizin. Nagel hat von 2004 bis 2021 als Professor für Molekulare Pflanzenphysiologie am Lehrstuhl für Botanik I am Julius-von-Sachs-Institut des Biozentrums und danach bis Ende Juni 2026 als Seniorprofessor am Physiologischen Institut der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) geforscht und gelehrt.
