This week I participated in an unusually collegial and productive Senate hearing about approaches to platform transparency, presided over by Senator Coons. My detailed written testimony, including appendices listing other resources and attempting to identify platforms potentially covered by proposed laws, is here. It captures a lot of detailed questions and concerns that I have been thinking about for a while, but not had time to write about anywhere else, including about surveillance issues.

The first edition of the Kyiv Biennial named The School of Kyiv took place in 2015. By adapting, or rather reappropriating the well-known and highly commercial format of the international exhibition, Vasyl Cherepanyn, one of the organizers of the Biennial, sought to reflect the Maidan revolution in a thematic format of education. The school epitomized the idea of a beginning, of a new page in the history of liberated Ukraine, which needs to be learned and studied.

On this World Press Freedom Day, it is important to remember that press freedom is never guaranteed as highlighted by the preliminary results of the forthcoming Media Pluralism Monitor 2022, which has analysed the overall status of media pluralism in the year 2021.

Barriers in our physical environment are still widespread. While AI systems could eventually support detecting them, it first needs open training data. Here we provide a dataset for detecting steps and stairs.
