Die Entdeckung, dass Viren Krebs auslösen können, hat ihm den Nobelpreis für Medizin eingebracht. 2008 hat das Nobel-Komitee Harald zur Hausen diese Auszeichnung verliehen. Der Mediziner hatte herausgefunden, dass Gebärmutterhalskrebs durch eine Virusinfektion ausgelöst wird. Eine Entdeckung, deren Wurzeln bis nach Würzburg reichen: Von 1969 bis 1972 hatte zur Hausen am hiesigen Institut für Virologie der Universität Würzburg geforscht und an seiner Habilitation gearbeitet.
